Chen Lusha, a Chinese international student studying journalism at Boston University, won one of 24 Pulitzer Center international reporting fellowships in 2013. To win the fellowship, a candidate had to have some medical knowledge and submit two profiles. The road leading up to the fellowship was rocky. One of Chen’s teachers questioned whether or not she was a journalism major when Chen struggled shooting a news program in a studio. Through volunteering for UNICEF, Chen was able to gain medical knowledge and gather enough information to compile a reporting plan with solid stories and an outline.
